BASIC SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED FOR FAR TOO LONG AND IS TIME COHBS AND THE TEACHER UNIONS SPEAK.

JHS 3 students were recalled to school exactly one month ago by His Excellency the President of the Republic. SHS 3 students were also recalled a week before.
This actually made both SHS and JHS resumed academic work fully to prepare these final year students to write their WAEC exams.
But what do we see?
The SHSs have been given govt subvention and the needed resources to run their schools.

Top of it all, is that govt has given huge sums of money to be shared among staff members of all the SHS teacers in the country as teachers motivation, and each SHS teacher is receiving more than Ghc500. The question is what are these teachers at the SHS doing differently that their counterpart teachers at the JHS are not doing?
Do the Basic School Teachers don’t deserved to be motivated? Are they not all talking in the classes to bear the same risk?
JHSs have not been given Capitation Grant. No money for TLMs like marker pens, manular cards and others. No T&T for attending meetings and workshops. No money is given for conveyance of materials to school. Meanwhile Headteachers are called to attend meetings and workshops at the expense of their pocket. Where do the Headteacher gets the money to undertake all these activities. Which ministry or department use their head’s money to run the office.

Furniture in our offices and classes are problematic. Is the government expecting the Headteacher to use his meager salary to run the school? Is it fair? Do the Basic school teachers don’t deserve to be motivated? Can you imagine that govt asked the Basic School Heads and their Teachers to use their Salary to register all the KG 1 to B4 pupils online and this ODK thing. Whereas monies were given to register all the SHS WASSCE candidates for free. Even responsibility allowance, govt is not paying for Headteachers. Can this happen in the SHS? Some Basic School Teachers have first degrees and Masters. So if this continues to persist, most teachers will leave the Basic Schools and go to SHS and future teachers will think of pursuing courses that will qualify them to teach at the Higher level. But the most difficult task is to teach these KG and Primary School Pupils for them to acquire knowledge. There are a number of challenges facing Basic Schools.
COHBS leadership should be in touch with our unions and other appropriate authorities and raise these issues for them to be addressed.

Basic School Heads and teachers are not treated well in the country.
Fairness should prevail.
